Celebrations as Greenland’s very own airline turns 50

Sikorsky S55

Sikorsky S55

It flew in Greenland from 1960 to 1965 and was chartered by Greenland Air from the Canadian company Kenting Helicopters. Greenland Air did not fly these machines themselves and, as with the Canso and the Otter, they were wet leased and not owned by Greenland Air. They flew for the United States Air Force, USAF, between Kangerlussuaq and the DYE-1 radar station near Sisimiut carrying personnel and supplies.
The photo shows an S55 in Kenting colours at DYE-1. It is on floats, which were commonly used because there was snow at DYE-1 for part of the year. In 1964 the contract passed from Kenting to Keystone Helicopters, also from Canada, but the helicopters were the same.
